- Creative Writing

- This course is designed to help prepare you to become more competent in writing within the disciplines of short story, poetry, and drama. You will work hard to master the drafting, editing, revising, critiquing, and creative thinking skills necessary to become a better writer. We will be reading from a variety of mentor texts, focusing on different skill-sets and styles which we can pull from to use in our own writing. Each week we will focus on a different skill or element that we will work to enhance. I expect you to come to class having read texts that are assigned, produce at least one original work each week, and bring drafts to class to participate in peer-critique. A strong emphasis will be placed on participation and a willingness to practice, this means revising and editing based on feedback from both myself and classmates. This class will be a safe space to try out new techniques, toy with new ideas, and think outside the box when it comes to your writing. The more you are willing to participate and share your writing and ideas with others, the more we will all grow as writers.

This course is designed to help students improve their reading comprehension skills through establishing a reading habit in the busy lives of high schoolers. I am hoping that we can work together to create passionate readers who seek out every opportunity to read voraciously. Our focus will include instruction in fluency, vocabulary, linguistic elements and comprehension using a variety of fiction and informational texts. We will also use advanced word study kits, PowerUp, and other supportive instructional tools.

- Our philosophy is that all students have access to all books. Each language arts course covers American and World literature and the use of critical literary lenses. The selection of literature ranges from fiction and poetry to speeches, letters, and journals. Students will see where this literature fits in relation to the events and culture of the time and how to use the literary lens to add different perspectives in order to cultivate a more thorough understanding of the text. Every student can pursue honors distinction regardless of course section. Teachers differentiate to meet each student where they are at and through real-world exploration grow into world class thinkers, readers, and writers

- In this course you will continue to develop your reading and writing skills in a variety of contexts. We will advance our writing skills for a variety of purposes, including to argue, to persuade, and to share stories. The goal of this course is to expose students to a variety of literature and refine students’ writing skills to be prepared for upper grades material. The texts listed below will guide our study, however they will be supplemented with additional sources including essays, videos, short stories, poems, articles, etc. throughout the year as necessary. We will be reading a variety of texts this year that will bring up controversial topics, ideas, and events, which we will be discussing during class time. Being respectful of others’ ideas, beliefs, thoughts, observations, and opinions is imperative and will be expected at all times. My classroom is a safe space for all people to ask questions, share ideas, and be themselves.
